Elliot Spence is like no other book I've seen before. It truly inspires the reader to be whatever they imagine they can be. Elliot Spence has a lot of main characters. Maybe a bit too many, but every good book has its rough spots. The characters are only the meat, but what good would meat have without bones? The plot, the bones in this analogy, is what makes this book truly inspiring. There are also multiple themes and symbols within this book.
Elliot Spence has very intricate characters. The author, K. R. Burg, definitely has attention-to-detail in her writing. The most important character would have to be Elliot Spence himself; after all, the book is written from his perspective. Elliot Spence is that smart, quirky kid you would probably see doing other people's homework except, he doesn't have glasses. "They probably all hate me now that I gave them extra homework..."(5). Garth, Elliot's agent partner, also plays a very important role in this book. Garth would probably be the last guy you want to have as a partner, though, due to his past... "I don't want to be responsible for babysitting...a kid!"(35). The nemesis in this book, a character that shall not be named due to his secrecy playing a crucial part in the plot, would also fall under the "main characters" category due to him... well... being the antagonist. There are quite a few themes in this book. One major theme, and probably the main one, is "You can become anything you want to become as long as you try". There are others as well, such as: "Believe in yourself," "Leave the past in the past," and "If you live your life not trusting anyone, you will live a poor life". Some less major themes are: "Gain help when help is needed," and "Help others in need". There are also quite a few symbols in Elliot Spence. One major symbol is Sergei's mansion, showing that Sergei was very rich. Rich enough to pay off a double agent. Another symbol is Elliot's distaste in khakis. "Ugh! They look even worse than Garth's!"(57). Thus showing us that he is just another ordinary boy. Just that Elliot is also an agent. A symbol that stuck out the most to me is Elliot himself. Showing us how K. R. Burg believes that anyone can become anything. "Me? An agent?!"(13). This book, Elliot Spence: Junior High Spy, is one of the best and most inspiring books that I have read in a while. This book has a truly unique message behind it. That message is: "You can become anyone you wish to be, just as long as you try". This message along with the unique characters, plot, and the theme are what makes this book so thrilling to read. I would recomend this book to anyone. |
